After adopting a structurally dovish reaction function since 2008, central banks have pivoted to a structurally hawkish approach this year faced with the prospect of losing their credibility – in other words, inflation expectations becoming unanchored. In fact, acting to maintain their credibility is their number-one aim, regardless of the impact on economic growth.
