After strong labor market data and inflation that remains above the Fed’s target, the market has reached its conclusion: the policy rate is almost certain to rise next week. The probability increased from 59 percent to 87 percent after last week’s inflation data. At first glance, that makes sense. Yet it is worth considering what Fed chair Kevin Warsh really wants to achieve with such a move.
